Your spine consists of 33 vertebrae, each with a unique functione and the vital roles these vertebrae play in your overall health.
The Anatomy of the Spine
The human spine is divided into five distinct regions, each containing a specific number of vertebrae:
Cervical Spine (7 Vertebrae): Located in the neck, these vertebrae (C1-C7) support the head and allow for a wide range of motion.
Thoracic Spine (12 Vertebrae): These vertebrae (T1-T12) are attached to the ribs and play a crucial role in protecting the heart and lungs.
Lumbar Spine (5 Vertebrae): The lower back (L1-L5) bears much of the body’s weight and is responsible for lifting and carrying.
Sacral Spine (5 Vertebrae): These vertebrae (S1-S5) are fused together to form the sacrum, which connects the spine to the pelvis.
Coccygeal Spine (4 Vertebrae): Commonly known as the tailbone, these fused vertebrae provide support for sitting and balance.
